Dhaka being the most populated city in Bangladesh is also one of the most populated in the world. The Greater Dhaka Area has over 18 million people and while the city itself has a population estimated to be over 8.5 million. It is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, more than 23,000 per square kilometer within a total area of 300 square kilometers.
At more than 31 percent, Bangladesh has the highest percentage of its population living below the national poverty line in South Asia.
